[OOC] Profile
Jan. 4th, 2022 03:59 pmWHole thing is a work in progress. Apologies for the mess! Rhain takes quite a bit of inspiration from the Bloodwing saga as written by Diane Duane.
Personality:
Fanatic: At his very core, Rhain is a loyalist to the Star Empire and would lay down his life for it if asked to. His upbringing, education and initiation to the Galae have left him with a very strong sense of his peoples' superiority and the mark they should be making on the galaxy. He's not bombastic about it, however – he doesn't put up propaganda posters or anything so asinine. What he will do is argue (quite vehemently) about the righteousness of the Empire's cause. He firmly believes that the Star Empire has a right (nay, a duty) to expand and become one of the most powerful forces in the galaxy.
Honorable: Like many Rihannsu, Rhain possesses a very strong streak of loyalty and personal honor known as mnhei'sahe. It is his guiding principle when dealing wit others and especially in social transactions. As it dictates, he may slay his closest friend in order to do him honor or he may debase himself for the security of an enemy. In the end it is the ultimate form of courtesy and respect for those around him and himself. It may (and probably will) seem alien to those who aren't Rihannsu.
Sharp-tongued: Let it never be said that Rhain suffers fools well. In fact, he has a habit of telling them (to their faces) what, precisely, they're doing wrong and how they're doing it wrong and what they ought to be doing to make it right. This generally extends to those beneath him in rank and on an equal-footing – although it has earned him a reprimand from a superior officer once or twice when he let's his irritation run away with his mouth. He has learned to be more careful around superiors. So far. This does have the effect of earning him relatively few friends from those working underneath him, of course. As long as they do their job right the first time, he doesn't care if they hate him or not.
Formal: Rhain operates on the assumption that he shouldn't be chummy with his superiors, he certainly shouldn't be friends with his inferiors and those that are his social (or military) equals deserve the respect afforded to them as protocol dictates. While you may catch him fraternizing off-duty, when he's on, he's on – and he's not about to let something like a friendly drink the night before interfere with how he treats someone he's evaluating. This may, unfortunately, mean he's not owed many political favors.
Decadent: Despite his dedication to duty and the Empire, Rhain does appreciate the finer things in life. Sometimes a bit too much. Considering he doesn't necessarily have many luxuries, he tends to indulge when he gets the chance. This occasionally leads to long nights up drinking with friends when he manages to get his hands on a fine bottle of liquor (he's a bit of a lush) or the appropriation of a few expensive pieces of art for his personal quarters. Said pieces of art tend, liquor or other delicacies tend to be very expensive. Then again, what else does he plan to spend his money on?
Xenophobic: Life in the Empire has not exposed Rhain to many aliens outside of news stories or porpaganda. As a result of his upbringing, he tends to be extremely wary (if not hostile) when first encountering a member of another species, whether they're a Klingon, a Terran or a Ferengi. Naturally, he's better then them – they're not Rihannsu, after all.
Ambitious: Although he's a loyalist and tends not to indulge in political favors, he still has ambition. Rhain wants command of his own ship one day (his parents' influence no doubt) and he's prepared to work hard and overcome whatever obstacles get in his way – as long as it's not to the detriment of the Empire, of course. As such, he does his best to make sure his superiors notice that he does good work.
Quirks: When dealing with especially difficult problem or even when his mind is simply preoccupied, Rhain tends to suffer from insomnia. Although it can be rectified with drugs (which he's turned to when he really needs the sleep), he generally prefers to think through it or go do something – playing the flute, trying to solve the problem or just spending some time reading.
Background: Rhain ir-Aihai tr'Khnialmnae was born on ch'Rihan, the Rihannsu capital world, in year 1912 of the RSE. Both of his parents – Raya, his mother and Sait, his father, were officers in the Galae and his mother was a member of House s'Khnialmnae. His mother was, of course, given leave in order to ensure a healthy pregnancy. As was traditional, he was born at home in his family's rather small estate (more of a large house than any actual land-holdings). Fortunately for himself and his mother, it was a relatively easy birth and he was proven to be without physical defect and apparently of sound mind.
He spent the next five years of his life being taught the basics – walking, talking, language, some simple mathematics. Everything a young Rihannsu needed to know. As his parents were usually off on assignment, he was brought up by a loving aunt and several other close family members. Fortunately, both his parents managed to make it home for his d'Sora – which went perfectly well. He passed the rigid inspection and was finally a person in the truest sense of the word. Not a citizen, of course – but he was on the road to adulthood.
He immediately begin the first stage of his formal education, being home-schooled and taught by a private tutor – his family could afford him that much, at the least. He learned the core basics, as well as showing an aptitude for computers and a love of Romulan history. He had playmates and childhood friends – mainly cousins and other relatives from the s'Khnialmnae – and his life was that of a typical Romulan child. He did miss his parents, considering they were absent much of the time. He was permitted occasional calls to speak with them, although they were typically audio only (except for very rare occasions). He buried his disappointment deep – he knew that his parents had a duty to the Empire, one that he would have to fulfill too. It was for the good of his people. That lesson he learned quickly.
As he grew older, he entered the second phase of his education – the Broadening. Here he entered a much larger school with other young Rihannsu and it proved to be a happy time of his life, if also one requiring much study. Considering his earlier aptitude with computers, he was shunted into the Communications specialty and elected to take courses in other major aspects of starship operation. His parents had gone to the stars – he wished to follow. His mother was reassigned to the ch'Rihan defensive fleet a few years into his Broadening and as a result he was able to speak with her more often. They developed a close relationship and although he harbored slight resentment to his father for once more being away, he buried it under his dedication to the Empire. His loyalty and idealism were being hammered into a tool for the Rihannsu.
The final five years of his education proved much the same. He continued to specialize in the operations and running of starships (focusing on communications – he became quite good at cracking whatever codes or message encryption were put before him) and learned how to work well with others. Although he learned the necessity and joy of working as a coherent team, he was not always the easiest to work with. He was certainly not perfect, but he demanded that others do things right the first time and his rather blunt attitude did not always earn him friends. He dabbled in romance during this period of life and one or two impassioned courtships that ended poorly. That cooled his romantic ardor somewhat, but it didn't slow down his obsession with reaching the stars. He saw a bit more of his parents, but as always duty called them away. During his last year of schooling, he suffered a cracked collar-bone during a sporting event. It healed nicely, but did slow him down for a few weeks. It also gave him a keen appreciation for modern medical technology.
After the end of his formal schooling, he entered his five-year stint in the armed forces (one which he would extend later). He found the work in some parts to be dull, in others quite exciting, but throughout it all his passion and love of his people and Empire burned stronger. There was an unfortunate, freak accident with an airlock which almost killed him. Fortunately he survived and recovered, although the incident did leave him wary of equipment checks and airlocks in general. At the end of his five-year stint, he successfully managed to test into Officer Training, where he spent a year preparing for life in the Galae as an operations officer.
He graduated and entered the service at age twenty-six. In the last five years, promotion has come to him, earning him a step up the ladder. His ambition has not yet cooled, of course.
